My name is Alexi K. I am a contemporary artist, based in Birmingham, in the UK. My art is all about abstracting the everyday and speculating the future: architecture, people, diagrams, data, and bright colours. I'm inspired by Cubism, Futurism, Bauhaus and Constructivism. ''ABSTRACTING THE EVERYDAY''

ON THE SLATE

This piece has been around for a while, and the size isn't one I'm currently into ( 40cm x 40cm x 3cm..? ) so I'm going to use it to experiment on. However, there are some cool slate-and-concrete tones in there, and lots of different surface textures, too.

So, apologies if you're a fan of a particular earlier version of this piece, but for me, I'm rather tired of having to scroll down and seeing it constantly reappear in all its many frustrating iterations.

ALEXI K AT THE LONDON ART FAIR - FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY*

*Just to be clear, I am not in the current London Art Fair. I was merely a visitor. However, on the way back from there, en route to Marylebone and then the Midlands, I spotted this beautiful section of wall, currently under repair, at Moorgate Tube Station. I love the colour of the concrete and the ghostly blue line. 

So I am declaring this patch of wall at Moorgate, an official Alexi K.

Like the examples before it, this was made out of the discarded scraps of the preceding compositions that are found at the edge of my digital 'artboard'. There is no end to the shapes and structures that can be made out of these fragments, without even having to draw new ones. You are simply just recycling old shapes, lines and groups. They react in novel ways to what is over, or under them. Even my logo can slide in under the art, instead of sit on top.

GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS ABSTRACT

Last night, on Christmas Eve, I started to design a digital Christmas card to send out. Nothing commercial, just something I send to friends and family. By around 2am Christmas morning I completely ran out of steam, and thought, I need to be asleep or Christmas Day will be a write-off. This is the first time I've failed to get any kind of card done.

Today, while the turkey was roasting, I opened the files and tried to salvage something from all the fragments, and still couldn't come up with anything.

However...these 'fragments' do look rather beautiful in their own right, so I'm putting them out there as a late Xmas gift to you. Enjoy the holidays!

HOMMAGE À PICASSO ET BRAQUE AVEC CHEVRONS

I was going to leave this off the blog, but having looked at it again, I've decided I really like it. It's a structure that I can only see in my mind's eye: The repeated towns and villages as depicted by Picasso and Braque, which I saw at the fantastic PIONEERING CUBISM exhibition, circa 1990, in NYC at the MOMA. This is my version... made with chevrons.
