UNTITLED WORK IN PROGRESS 28 / 11 / 2018 ( B )

This is actually a recycled canvas, that friends from the kids charity across the corridor gave me. It originally had graffiti spray paint on, which I then covered over with System 3 acrylic white. This has been on the back-burner because for some reason, I could barely get the masking tape to stick to it, no matter how much paint I piled onto it. Whether that was because the spray paint affected it, I have no idea. So it's been a bit of a battle with this one, and will remain the 'back-up' composition while the new series of paintings gets underway. 

Aside from that, it appears to be trying to evolve into something akin to my 'Mood Flag' paintings that I was doing years ago, and it'll be interesting to see if this progresses that style away from the original idea.

LIFE IMITATES ART

THIS TIME LAST WEEK...

Went to the 20th anniversary of BPN Architects on Thursday. Rebecca, a designer at Stephen Arthur, wore a startlingly familiar skirt while she posed next to my art across the street..!

And finally...

I'd especially like to thank BPN for their openness and genuine enthusiasm in championing local artists. 

Hopefully this will give inspiration for other local companies to tap the huge creative wellspring that resides in the area. It seems that for Midlands artists, real-world opportunities such as this are sadly few and far between, so perhaps it's no coincidence that such a creative-minded company as BPN are celebrating 20 years of being in business. If more companies thought the same way, Birmingham would be known for the creative powerhouse that it could so easily be.

THIS WAY...UP?

I love seeing how people orientate my paintings. I never tell them which is the right way up because I don't even know.

ABSTRACT DIGITAL

My colleague, fashion designer Antone Douglas, is curating an art and design show called CONCEPT ROOM, at the Custard Factory in Digbeth this weekend ( opens 12pm Friday until 8pm Saturday, 16 - 17 Oct ). I will be debuting my sneakers, and perhaps some digital translations of my abstract paintings, such as the example below.

Another successful show for The Cobalt Blue!

On the clip you will see a 2-minute 'walking tour' of my two latest pieces, filmed at The Custard Factory, Birmingham, as part of the Digbeth First Friday event. The droning noise you can hear in the background is Stourbridge artist Paul Gittins' guitar installation, where the guitars played autonomously, throughout the day. The constantly-changing sequence of abstract musical motifs provided a perfect soundtrack to the entire show. Beautiful!

SCALE IT UP

If you scroll back down a bit, you'll see some closeups of my last abstract ( March ). Well, those closeups actually look better than the thing itself, so from now on, all the stripes on my abstract pieces will be scaled up times three.
