EXPERIMENTAL POSTCARD DRAWINGS ( REJECTED )

As with all of my postcards, I don't have any preconceived idea of what I'm actually going to draw - they are all just spontaneous, off-the-cuff compositions. When they then start to go wrong, I try and rescue them, with mixed results.

JANUARY 2017: ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL REMIXES OF ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

One of the obvious down-sides of creating a painted composition, is that once it's sold, the design is no longer in your hands. In the case of my work, it takes months to finely balance a piece ( it's a form of automatic composition, in that apart from a starting grid, everything is ad-libbed until the picture 'feels' finished ). On that journey, many interesting forms and motifs may evolve. In late 2016 / early 2017, I decided to painstakingly go about re-creating some of my recent paintings in digital 'vector' form. This allows me to do two things: 1 ) Significantly enlarge the composition without loss of quality or pixellation; 2 ) Deconstruct my artwork so that it can be remixed, recoloured and recomposed.

SNOWBOUND

Being snowed-in right now in England, the enforced time at home has allowed me to find these drawings from December 2004, when I was staying in New Rochelle, New York. We were similarly snow-bound, and on one of the days, I spent an hour in the garden looking at tiny fragments of twigs that had fallen off the trees from the weight of the snow. They looked like intriguing bits of code, or written characters from an as-yet undiscovered language. It was very satisfying to make art that was so minimal.

TRUNK CALL

I was asked by an American design company recently to resurrect my 'POLYGRAPH NUDES' style, to which I happily obliged.

Over the years, this particular way of drawing has attracted the interest of many architects, interior designers, fabric designers and students. Therefore, when I was asked to supply some drawings for a hip hotel currently being built in New York City, I saw this as a good excuse to, at long last, explore this style again and see if I can evolve it.

Below you will see a rather belated attempt at a male figure...I'm not sure that it's particularly successful, either, as it does look somewhat androgynous. However, I rather like it, so maybe I should consider including more male figures in the future?
